SUMMARY:On-Farm Demonstration Research to Promote Cover Cropping in Blueberry Production
DESCRIPTION:A collaborative field day between BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food\, FarmFolk CityFolk and E.S. Cropconsult Ltd. FarmFolk CityFolk\, in partnership with the Investment Agriculture Foundation\, will highlight the BC Climate Agri-Solutions Fund and discuss the practice of cover cropping for blueberry production. The BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food and E.S.Cropconsult Ltd. will highlight their On-Farm Demonstration Research project that is evaluating different cover crop mixes for supporting biological pest control. \nWe invite farmers to join us and hear from guest speakers\, tour Virasat Ag. Inc\, see a variety of cover crops\, and learn about their cover cropping program. Farmers will be able to meet other farmers in the area and learn about different operations. This will be an opportunity to hear from industry specialists\, fellow farmers\, and the owner/operator of our host farm.  \nLearn about cover cropping:\nCover cropping is an agricultural practice that involves planting crops specifically to improve soil health\, increase climate adaptability and promote climate mitigation. Cover crops are grown primarily for the benefits they provide to the soil and the ecosystem and\, when carefully chosen and managed\, can be highly beneficial to producers. Benefits include\, protecting the soil from erosion\, suppressing weeds\, reducing soil compaction\, increasing soil organic matter\, improving soil structure\, increasing soil water-holding capacity\, and enhancing nutrient cycling. In addition\, cover crops can provide a habitat for beneficial insects\, such as pollinators and predators of pests that can support improved crop pollination and biological pest control. \nLearn about different programs and research projects:\nThe On-Farm Demonstration Research (OFDR) project\, led by the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food and E.S. Cropconsult Ltd\, provides support to producers to conduct farmer-led demonstration research to increase the adoption of regenerative practices and adapt to climate change. This field day will be a great opportunity to learn about OFDR and how you can do it on your farm! The host farm will speak to their experience setting up different cover crop mixes in blueberry alleyways to attract ground beetles for enhanced natural predation of pests. \nThe BC Living Lab\, supported through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Agricultural Climate Solutions (ACS) program. ACS supports the integration of scientific research and farming operations\, with the goal of increasing the adoption of effective practices and technologies that help farmers contribute to climate change mitigation and improve the natural environment. The BC Blueberry Council and the University of British Columbia will speak about what producer involvement may look like for the BC Living Lab in the next few years. \nDelta Farmland and Wildlife Trust (DFWT) helps farmers implement sustainable agricultural practices to improve productivity\, and maintain areas of wildlife habitat on their farms. DFWT offers two programs with cost-share incentives to help farmers plant habitats for native bees. Cover cropping and rotational grazing can help to build soil\, sequester carbon\, improve pastures\, increase crop yields and create a diversified ecosystem where plants and animals can thrive. \nCover cropping is a sustainable agricultural practice that involves planting crops specifically to improve soil health\, increase climate adaptability and promote climate mitigation. Cover crops are grown primarily for the benefits they provide to the soil and the ecosystem and\, when careful chosen and managed\, can be hugely beneficial to farmers. Benefits include\, protecting the soil from erosion\, suppressing weeds\, reducing soil compaction\, increasing soil organic matter\, improving soil structure\, increasing soil water-holding capacity\, and enhancing nutrient cycling. In addition\, cover crops can provide a habitat for beneficial insects\, such as pollinators and predators of pests. \nRotational grazing is a set of techniques used to control the time aspect of grazing that typically leads to overgrazing in a continuous grazing system. Livestock are moved into a defined area\, typically called a paddock\, where they have access to graze the plants in that area. They are then rotated to a new paddock while grazed plants have a chance to recover. The livestock are not moved back to that paddock again until the plants there have fully recovered. In this field day\, we will discuss the key tools that you need to ensure a successful rotational grazing program: \n\nContinuous movement\nPortable infrastructure\nBalance between grazing and rest\nCorrect stocking rate & stocking density\nAppropriate species/breed\n\nWe invite farmers to join us and hear from guest speakers\, tour Lost Savanna Farm\, see a variety of cover crops and livestock and learn about their cover cropping and rotational grazing program. SUMMARY:BC Cover Cropping Farmer Panel
DESCRIPTION:This event is geared toward all BC farmers interested in learning more about cover cropping in agriculture. \nCover cropping is a method of planting that helps build healthy soil and can be practiced in any farming operation. Cover cropping keeps the ground covered and helps with continued carbon sequestration in non-production areas. They significantly reduce emissions from nitrogen fertilizers by providing healthy nutrients to the soil. When carefully chosen and managed properly\, cover crops can benefit production for farmers and help mitigate climate change. \nFarmers will have a chance to meet and hear from 3 farmer panelists from across the province. Panelists will introduce themselves and give a brief introduction into their experience with cover cropping. Our moderator will alternate between asking pre determined questions and questions from participants. Farmers on the call will have the opportunity to ask our panelists questions and learn about cover cropping in 4 different regions of BC.  \nGuest Speakers \nFelix Egerer\, Unsworth Vineyard \nFelix worked as the Viticulturist at Tantalus Vineyards in Kelowna from 2018 until recently when he moved to Vancouver Island and now runs the vineyards at Unsworth. He as Academic training at UC Davis and Geisenheim University as well as harvest experiences in cool climates around the world. His focus lies on establishing and maintaining regenerative agriculture systems\, especially with regards to soil management.  \nLes Willms\, LH Willms Inc. \nLes and Hannah Willms run LH Willms Inc. and both have deep roots in farming. The farm has been in his family since 1968 and Les took over the operation fully in 2002. They grow canola\, wheat\, and barley on 3\,000 acres in Rose Praire. They grow a number of different cover crop varieties and are determined to trial what they can to find the best fit for growing cover crops in the North.  \nMatthew Carr\, Linden Lane Farms \nMatthew is the owner of Linden Lane Farms\, a diversified organic market garden and nursery that focuses on production\, research and education. The farm is 150 acres consisting of a mixture of forest\, pasture\, 6 acres of which they cultivate. Matt is the lead agrologist at Cultivate Horticulture and specializes in production horticulture focusing on organic and soil-health based systems. He has two Prairie Horticulture Certificates and a Bachelor of Science major in Horticulture and minor in Soil Science from the University of Saskatchewan. \nThis is a free online event open to all\, but registration is required. Together with his wife Aubyn and several ranchhands\, he moves cattle\, sheep\, pigs and poultry across irrigated pastures and rugged rangelands along the mighty Fraser River. \nSteve Meggait \nSteve Meggait is a fourth generation farmer operating Fresh Valley Farms\, a certified organic diversified livestock farm in Armstrong BC. One hundred years from when his great-grandfather purchased the farmstead\, the tools they use to manage the farm have changed significantly. SUMMARY:Fraser Valley Field Day: Cover Cropping
DESCRIPTION:This field day is geared toward all BC farmers interested in learning more about cover cropping in agriculture. \nCover cropping is a method of planting that helps build healthy soil and can be practiced in any farming operation. Cover cropping keeps the ground covered and helps with continued carbon sequestration in non-production areas. They significantly reduce emissions from nitrogen fertilizers by providing healthy nutrients to the soil. When carefully chosen and appropriately managed\, cover crops can benefit production for farmers and help mitigate climate change. \nFarmers will have a chance to see three large test plots with a cover crop mix planted with corn. Each plot receives a different application and is monitored for productivity. Soil sampling is done regularly\, and data is recorded diligently to create a useful report when the trial ends. Farmers will have access to this data and information on how each plot performs. The field day will include a field walk to each plot where attendees can asses the cover crops growing\, our host will speak about the process and results for each plot and answer questions\, and additional guest speakers will lend their experience and expertise to support learning. \nAbout the Host Farm \nThe ReFeed Farm is located in the heart of the Fraser River delta in Langley\, BC. They work directly with partner farms to develop programs\, best practices\, and new products to help farmers build healthy soil and growing systems. ReFeed works with Davistead farms\, a family-run business that has been farming in the Langley Township for over 100 years. Davistead raises dairy cattle\, growing forage crops on their land for feed. ReFeed Farms utilizes acreage on Davistead Farms to experiment with growing cover crops amongst forage crops\, monitoring for performance and changes in the soil. They plant a mixed cover crop species amongst their corn crop\, on three plots that receive different applications.  \nRobby Gass \nRobby Gass is the Soil Specialist at ReFeed Farms\, bringing 25 years of experience in organic farming and deep expertise in soil microscopy and management. He has decades of experience in conventional farming and spent over a decade running an organic herb farm in South Africa. Robby broadened his in understanding and expertise with a series of roles as an educator and consultant in horticulture and organic farming while earning an MSc in organic farming from SRUC Glasgow University. He attended Dr. Elaine Ingham’s world-renowned Soil Foodweb School in Oregon where he was awarded a certificate in soil microscopy. \nDrew Bondar \nDrew is the Metro Vancouver Regional Agrologist for the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and former Executive Director of Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust. Drew has years of experience  working with farmers to enhance farmland for soil health and wildlife habitat. He is the Founder of a small business that rescues and delivers off-grade produce and has experience working across the food supply chain. With dual degrees in agroecology and civil engineering\, Drew’s educational background has provided training in a wide range of disciplines from project management to soil biology.  \nConley Keyes\nConley is a Regional Agrologist for Sea to Sky\, Sunshine Coast\, and Central Fraser Valley working in the Extension and Support Services Branch for the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Conley has degrees from Northern Alberta Instituate of Technology and University of British Columbia is geological technology and agroecology and sustainable agriculture.
