The BC Climate Agri-Solutions Fund and Organic BC are excited to share the opportunity for you to learn all about rotational grazing! Join experienced organic ranchers Tristan Banwell of Spray Creek Ranch and Steve Meggait of Fresh Valley Farms for a presentation on the principles of rotational grazing, followed by an interactive discussion on the finer points of the following topics:

  • Fencing – permanent perimeter, interior subdivision, smaller livestock fencing and layout options
  • Water – the use of irrigation systems, dedicated livestock water systems and portable tank systems
  • Winter grazing – stockpile grazing, swath grazing and bale grazing
  • Annual forages – fall planting for early spring grazing, warm season annuals and pasture cropping
  • Grass-finishing – how to keep ruminants on the gain with rotational grazing

Tristan Banwell

Tristan Banwell manages Spray Creek Ranch, a regenerative, organic, diversified 500-acre farm in the Northern St’at’imc Territory near Lillooet, BC. Together with his wife Aubyn and several ranchhands, he moves cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry across irrigated pastures and rugged rangelands along the mighty Fraser River.

Steve Meggait

Steve Meggait is a fourth generation farmer operating Fresh Valley Farms, a certified organic diversified livestock farm in Armstrong BC. One hundred years from when his great-grandfather purchased the farmstead, the tools they use to manage the farm have changed significantly. Steve has practiced rotational grazing for the last ten years with a focus on multi-purpose land-use, where fields are cropped for forage and pastured in the same season. He uses diversified cover crops and mixes annuals into perennial pastures, always with a mind to improve soil health and enhance the biodiversity of the farmscape.
